Description
A scarce nautical chart from the book: William Falconer, The Shipwreck, published in London, and printed for T. Cadell, 1772.
The map depicts the track of the ship Falconer was travelling with, after leaving the port of Candia [today Heraklion, Crete] towards Athens, and after encountering a storm was wrecking on rocks near Cape Colonna [Sounion].
The track is annotated with comments related to the ships struggle, like: 'Ship bears away..', 'Topsails hurled..', 'Guns launched overboard..' etc. The author survived and created his poem on which the map is based. Wind arrows and a compass rose.
