Description
This rare and charming lithography of Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) in his study was made after a water color of his close friend E. Hildebrandt.
Printed facsimile caption in Humboldt's handwriting lower right reads: "Ein treues Bild meines Arbeits Zimmers, als ich den zweiten Theil des Kosmos schrieb. AV Humboldt" [A faithful picture of my study while I was writing the 2nd part of Cosmos].
The wall is decorated with a large wall map of the world. The informal library scene shows the elderly explorer looking up from writing at his desk, books piled on a table and dresser, and three large storage boxes on the floor.
Lithographed by Bardtenschlager after a design by E. Hildebrandt. Published by Alexander Duncker. With blind stamp publishers stamp in lower margin.
Reference: Werner, Petra. Himmel und Erde: Alexander von Humboldt und sein Kosmos. Akademie Verlag, 2004. p. 2.
