Description
Lovely full color example Sebastian Münster's Ptolemaic world map, from the Cosmographia of 1550. Relief is shown pictorially. The Ptolemaic map shows the known world before Columbus' discovery of America and before the rounding of the Cape of Good Hope in Africa by the Portuguese. Surrounding the earth are billowing clouds and numerous wind gods characterizing the winds. The woodcut technique with its insertion of fine lettering is amazingly elegant engraved, almost in the style of the copper engravings of Ortelius, Blaeu, or Hondius.
This charming map was published in the 1550-edition of Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia. This edition is considered to be Münster’s Magnum Opus. Münster presented his Ptolemaic world map juxtaposed to his new world map including the results of all the discoveries and explorations up to 1550. That new world map of the 1550-edition of the Cosmographia is also offered in this auction.
By 1588 a new edition of the Cosmographia had become necessary following the latest explorations and discoveries. All the maps were recut to bring them up to date. The 1588-Ptolemaic map and its equivalent and juxtaposed newest 1588-map of the world are also offered in this auction.

Shipping
Maps are shipped in solid tubes or flat between solid cardboard. Fully insured, signature required, and with online tracking. Shortly after shipment, you will get the tracking number by email.The standard is that we ship items by UPS or DHL for European destinations, and a flat shipping fee is added to each shipment. It is a one-time fee even if you buy multiple items. This fee covers shipping and insurance (up to the invoice amount) to:
- North America, Canada, Europe $ 30
- Asia $ 40
- For South America, Mauritius, Africa and Australia a shipping fee of $ 50 will be charged.
We charge only a one-time shipping fee if you have won 2 or more items.
