Description
A very rare state of the earliest separate map to show both North and South America. One of the first maps also to include Japan, and the first to refer to "Mare Pacificum", or the Pacific Ocean.
An attractively colored, nicely decorated map with Magellan’s ship Victoria, the only survivor of five vessels, and Brazil as the ‘place of the cannibals’ (Canibali).
This particular state is not noted in Burden’s The Mapping of North America. In all states the place name 'Chamaho' appears in New Spain. Our map however, includes the name “maho”, a variant of Chamaho, above Temistian.
It appears that the force of printing cracked the woodblock, taking part of the name with it.
After this edition, this particular map of America was never published again.
On verso the title is embedded in exquisite border decorations which are designed and crafted by the famous Hans Holbein.
This map was published in the 1578-edition of Sebastian Münster’s "Cosmographia". Münster was the first to introduce a separate map for each of the four then known continents.
The 1578-maps of the other continents, Europe, Africa, and Asia, are also offered in this auction.
Münster also presented his own world map juxtaposed to the Ptolemaic map of the world, reflecting the older knowledge of the world’s geography.
