Description
FIRST State of Pieter Van Den Keere's rare Carte a figures of America -- The First Single Sheet Map of America to include decorative panels. This first state (of six) of the map is extremely rare on the market. Burden located only 3 known examples.
The present example (issued in 1614) is the first state of the map, the only state to show Terra Australis as annexed to America Meridionalis. Including portraits of Christopher Columbus (America ..primum detecta) Amerigo Vespucci (America..nomen sortita) Ferdinand Magellan, Francis Drake, Thomas Cavendish and Olivier Van Noort and city views such as Havana (Cuba), Mexico City, Cusco (Peru), Pomeiooc (Virginia), Carolina (Florida) Saint Jacob Island, Cartagena de India (Colombia) Silver mines of Potosi (Peru), Phernambuco (Brazil) and Santo Domingo.
This novel map also indicates (inset) Hudson Bay discovered by Henry Hudson in 1614. (the B(ay) where Hudson did winter) and is adorned with figures of natives of Virginia, Chile, Brazil and Patagonia.
Pieter Van den Keere or KAERIUS (1571 - ca. 1646) was a Flemish religious fugitive, first to London, then to Amsterdam, where he became quite successful (together with Hondius) as an engraver, and publisher of maps, globes and atlases. In 1617 he published what is considered as the most beautiful atlas of the 17 Provinces “Germania inferior, id est, XVII Provinciarum” (Including his version of the Leo Belgicus). Kaerius swore to return to his native town of Gent in Flanders dead or alive once it was liberated from Spanish tyrannical occupancy. Hence his motto as firmly shown on this map: “WIE GAET ICK KEERE” (Some go but I will return!). We do not know if he finally made it back.

Shipping
Maps are shipped in solid tubes or flat between solid cardboard. Fully insured, signature required, and with online tracking. Shortly after shipment, you will get the tracking number by email.The standard is that we ship items by UPS or DHL for European destinations, and a flat shipping fee is added to each shipment. It is a one-time fee even if you buy multiple items. This fee covers shipping and insurance (up to the invoice amount) to:
- North America, Canada, Europe $ 30
- Asia $ 40
- For South America, Mauritius, Africa and Australia a shipping fee of $ 50 will be charged.
We charge only a one-time shipping fee if you have won 2 or more items.
