Description
A very attractive, copper engraved full colored map of North and South America, Caribbean with description text beside the image, and dated 1761, by Louis Charles Desnos / Claude Buy de Mornas. From their: 'Atlas Methodique et Elementaire de Geographie et Histoire...,Paris 1761.
This map is from the luxury edition with separately engraved decorative border added. This important atlas of the abbot Claude Buy de Mornas († 1783), professor of geography, geographer of Louis XVI, of the children of France and of the Duke of Berry was entirely engraved in intaglio on double pages mounted on tabs, adorned with a beautiful rococo style frame and accompanied by an explanatory text, it consists of four volumes published in 1761-1762.
The volumes are illustrated with plates showing the systems of Ptolemy, Tycho Brahé, Copernicus and Descartes, the different climates, the longitudes and the latitudes, the seasons, the poles, the terrestrial and celestial globes, the way of recognising stars in the sky, continents, historical and mythological maps, etc.
