Description
Superb engraved map of Asia with Latin text on verso. This magnificent “cornerstone” map is a fine example of the famous “carte-a-figures” maps created by the Blaeu family.
A classic mapping of the Asian continent, this highly decorative map is exquisitely engraved with elegant vignette borders, along with a decorative cartouche flanked by nomads in the upper left, seas embellished with galleons and fanciful sea creatures and a depiction of the Great Wall of China.
The side panels depict ten pairs of the diverse Asian populations from Arabia, Persia, China and Southeast Asian regions: from Tartars to Javanese, Armenians to Moluccans. The nine engraved city-harbor views across the top panel are: Damascus, Jerusalem, Aden, Hormuz, Goa, Calicut (Calcutta), Kandy, Bantecn and Macau.
This map of Asia is from Blaeu's Theatrum orbis terrarum. First published as single-sheet versions of Blaeu's 1608 continental wall maps in 1617, the map appeared in atlas form in the 1631 edition of Blaeu's Atlantis Appendix, and in the 1635 and later editions of the Theatrum. The map itself contains extensive detail on what was known of Asia in the early 17th century. The Indian subcontinent is too narrow and the eastern coastline of Asia is severely truncated. Korea is shown as an island. Japan has a predominantly east to west direction. In China, there are several large erroneous inland lakes. The classic Northeast Passage is shown, along with a conjectural piece of North America.
This is either the 2nd state of 1621-30 as the name is changed to "Guiljelmo Blaeuw" in the title or the 3rd state.
Blaeu's maps are "esteemed by collectors for their decorative quality, historical importance, and as the highest expression of Dutch cartographic art during the period of its supremacy" - R.V. Tooley (Tooley, p 28).
