Description
A beautiful, large, very detailed map of Turin (Torino), Italy by Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam in 1668, engraved by Thomas Borgonius.
It is from the Atlas “Theatrum Statum Regiae Celsitudinis Sabaudiae ..." ( Town books of Italy; Piedmont & Savoy). This map is considered by many to be the “best” map ever produced of Turin, Italy.
The detail of this map is as fine as I have seen. There are hundreds of little figures engaged in their everyday lives. The buildings are nicely scaled for distance and even show each window and door. The key at the bottom labels 44 key buildings and attractions on the map.
There is a beautiful ribbon title cartouche that is over 21” wide and is carried by six putti. In addition there are an additional seven putti carrying crowns, crests and orders in two cartouches, one on each side.
The map sold at auction recently for as high as $2,750. A reproduction of this map is currently for sale on the Internet for $870. The atlas where this map came from sold in 1999 at Sotheby's for over $52,000.
Joan Blaeu (1596–1673) was a Dutch cartographer born in Alkmaar, the son of cartographer Willem Blaeu. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638. Joan became the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company.
Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571–1638), was a Dutch cartographer, atlas maker and publisher. He was one of the notable representatives of the Netherlandish / Dutch school of cartography in its golden age (the 16th and 17th centuries).
A fire destroyed the Blaeu studio completely in 1672.
