Description
A very early Brabant map, published in Venice, 1567.In excellent condition, and uncolored. On centre top, the crowned coat of arms of the Emperor Charles V with the emblems of the Order of the Golden Fleece, on both sides two more coats of arms. Title and place of publication in an Antwerp-style rollcartouche: 'Brabantiae Belgarum Provinciae recens exactaque descriptio Venetiis'.
This a third edition, engraved by Girolamo (Hieronymus) Olgiati (etcher), after a large size wall map by Jacob van Deventer (dating from 1536), and published by Oligiati himself.
The first being a separate publication of which no copies survived, the second was published by Michel Tramezini, Antwerp/Venice 1556-1560, and engraved bob Jacobus Bossius.
This, and the first two editions, were sometimes bundled in map books, not yet real atlases, made and named after the producer Antoine Lafreri (Lafreri atlasses)or IATO (Italian Atlasses assembled To Order.
This copy has no impression. The cartouche bottom right holds only the title, and underneath is the name of the engraver: 'Hieronymus Olgiarus incudebat, 1567'. A very strong and dark impression of a rare Brabant map in a truly excellent condition.
Reference: Bifolco-Ronca, Tav.280 State 2; Tooley (Italian Atlases), #143; Karrow, 25/1.2; Meurer (Strabo), #12; Dorigo-Franssen (Brabant), #4.2
