Description
An original rare copper engraved map of 'modern' Africa by Moithey, published by Etienne André Philippe de Pretot, Paris, from the atlas 'Cosmographie Universelle' - ca 1765. With an elaborate and decorative title cartouche, descriptive text along the left side.
Map drawn by the engineer Maurille-Antoine Moithey (1732-1805), publisher and dealer of geographical maps, bookseller. Engineer geographer of the King and professor of mathematics of the prince and the princess of Conti.
Moithey was the author of plans, maps, illustrated works and atlases, which he published and sometimes distributed himself.
