Description
Detailed sea chart of the "China Sea", first published by the British Admiralty in 1886, with correction to 1897 and small variations to 1913.
Covering from 7° South to 35° Latitude, inclusive of the Philippines, Taiwan / Formosa, China, Cambodia and Vietnam, and Singapore. In addition to a wealth of nautical detail and practical information for the mariner, this chart also offers excellent inland detail particular along navigable inland waterways including the Yangtze and Mekong Rivers. Depth sounding proliferate throughout.
This chart was prepared under supervision of Captain William James Lloyd Wharton KCB FRS FRGS (1843 – 1905), a British admiral and Hydrographer of the Navy. Engraved by Edward Weller.
The charts published by the Hydrographic Office of the Admiralty in London at the end of the nineteenth century represent well both cartographic history and also the history of European naval technology and surveying techniques. The concise coastal surveys were compiled to meet the naval demand for the most contemporary description, water depth, land elevation and directional readings.
The engraving is very clean and crisp fashion which is indicative of the English style of mapmaking in the mid to late nineteenth century. The British Admiralty has produced nautical charts since 1795 under the auspices of the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (HO). Its main task was to provide the Royal Navy with navigational products and service, but since 1821 it has also sold charts to the public.
For those interested in the mapping of Philippines/China as well as naval history, this chart serve as wonderful examples of both areas of study.
