Description
This fascinating 'busy' engraving is that of the inside of a Buddhist temple in Japan depicts a funeral procession for two ambassadors leading up to a somewhat hermaphrodite large Buddhist statue (Daibutsu). The procession walks between two frightening statues (horrible shapes) and the scene is filled with religious iconography.
A key in both Dutch and French is at bottom. This engraving was published in Arnold Montanus' influential early account of the 17th century Dutch embassies to Japan, first published by J. van Meurs in Amsterdam in 1669. From: 'Gedenkwaerdige Gesantschappen der Oostindische Maatschappy.' Decorative.
