Description
Rare map centred on Ayutthaya which town was situated eighty kilometres inland from the mouth of the Gulf of Thailand at the juncture of three rivers. Access required manoeuvring along a twisting river upstream against the current. It is an unusual map oriented to the East. In the key at the bottom of this map, 101 places along the river and environs are named.
Some are transliterations of Thai words, others are Dutch or French names.
At the mouth of the river a Dutch flag flies from a building. This is the Company storehouse.
François Valentijn (1666-1727), a missionary, worked at Amboina from 1684 to 1694 and 1705 to 1713 and travelled extensively in the VOC's lands. He is best known for his monumental history and description, ''Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën'' which remains one of the most important primary sources for the East Indies and neighbouring lands.
