Description
This fine Dutch Print Bible includes a total of 502 pages with copper engraved prints ; including five engraved titles, 3 folding maps (the Middle East, the Persian Gulf, Palestine). All in mint condition. Bound in contemp. panel blind-stamped calf with central ornament on both covers. Oblong folio (305x375mm.),
The plates are engraved by A. Collaert, J. Sadeler, CJ Visscher, C. Ryckemans after Rubens (Judgment of Solomon), Mr. de Vos, Mr. Van Heemskerck, P. Bruegel, H. Goltzius, C. Can den Broeck, K. van Mander, P. de Jode. A large number of engravings are signed C. J. Visscher.

Most of the engravings had already been published in 1643 by C. J. Visscher. With engravings by and after Paul Bril, Maarten van Heemskerck, Adriaen Collaert, Harmen Jansz. Müller, Pieter de (I) Jode, Jan (I) Collaert, Simon Cornelisz Brekegeest, Abraham Bloemaert, Jan Philipsz Schabaelje, Bartholomeus Willemsz. Dolendo, Jan van der Straet, J. Goltzius, Maerten de Vos.
Starting with an engraved title, "Theatrum Biblicum hoc est Historiae Sacrae Veteris et Novi Testamenti tabulis aeneis expressae" and divided into 5 parts each with a separate title:
I. Old Testament: 55 pp. of text, 290 pl., 2 maps -
II. New Testament: engraved title ("Historiae Sacrae Novi Testamenti"), 26 pp. of text, 139 pl., 1 map.
III. Acts of the Apostles: engraved title ("Acta Apostolorum"), 7 pp. of text, 56 pl.
IV. Fidei Apostolicae symbola: engraved title ("XII. Fidei apostolicae symbola, iconibus artificiosissimis"), 1 p. of text, 6 pl.
Visiones Apolyptiae: engraved title, page of text, 7 pl.
Complete title on printed title page : Den Grooten Figuer-Bibel. Verrijckt met leersame verclaeringhen over de selve figueren, midsgaders by-ghe-voeghde tijd-rekeningen, der ghedenckweerdige geschiedenissen onder Joden en heydenen voor-gevallen.
According to Poortman II, p.34: "Schabaelie was doopsgezind predikant te Alkmaar. Hij ging de 'Figuer-Bibel" zelf uitgeven en verkopen (...) de tekst en de meeste prenten waren in 1643 al uitgegeven door Nicolas Visscher. Hoe de zakelijke verhouding tussen Schabaelie en Visscher was weten we niet. (...) de prenten heeft hij hoogstwaarschijnlijk van Visscher gekocht." Maps are shipped in solid tubes or flat between solid cardboard. Fully insured, signature required, and with online tracking. Shortly after shipment, you will get the tracking number by email.The standard is that we ship items by UPS or DHL for European destinations, and a flat shipping fee is added to each shipment. It is a one-time fee even if you buy multiple items. This fee covers shipping and insurance (up to the invoice amount) to:
- North America, Canada, Europe $ 30
- Asia $ 40
- For South America, Mauritius, Africa and Australia a shipping fee of $ 50 will be charged.
We charge only a one-time shipping fee if you have won 2 or more items.
