Description
This Miami poster was created in the early 1960's by David Klein (1918 -2005) for TWA. It depicts “hotel row” along Collins Avenue leading to the corridor of South Beach. Famous venues such as The Deauville, The Eden Roc and Fountainbleu hotels line this famous location next to Biscayne Bay.
A bright sun is pictured with a towering image of jeweled cat’s eyes sunglasses making for one impressive image. This is a rare variant of this poster which had three versions.
- The first featured the main title of MIAMI across the upper portion of the poster.
- The second featured FLORIDA in the same location.
Both of these versions also had a silhouette of a 707 jet streaking across the sky.
- This third, more scarce version omitted the title and jet, apparently at David Klein’s request to keep the image as striking as possible.
Without the title and the hovering black sunglasses, it almost takes on the appearance of abstract art.
The American arstist David Klein was best known for his influential work in advertising. Although he produced illustrations for Broadway theatrical productions, Hollywood films, the United States Army, and numerous corporate clients, Klein is best remembered for the iconic travel images he created for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines (TWA) during the 1950’s and 1960’s.
TWA (Trans World Airlines) was formed in 1924 as Transcontinental & Western Air. The airline’s first route was New York to Los Angeles, soon followed by multiple National routes.
In the 1950s and 60s, Klein was commissioned by TWA during the ‘war of illustrators’ between several airlines. This competition was to out-style and out-class each other with bold, new illustration stylings by a single artist to represent the airline with colorful depictions of their many destinations. It can be argued that TWA won that conflict with their entry, David Klein.
His bold, graphic art and clever uses of theme and color are some of the most highly sought examples of airline travel posters.

Maps are shipped in solid tubes or flat between solid cardboard. Fully insured, signature required, and with online tracking. Shortly after shipment, you will get the tracking number by email.The standard is that we ship items by UPS or DHL for European destinations, and a flat shipping fee is added to each shipment. It is a one-time fee even if you buy multiple items. This fee covers shipping and insurance (up to the invoice amount) to:
- North America, Canada, Europe $ 30
- Asia $ 40
- For South America, Mauritius, Africa and Australia a shipping fee of $ 50 will be charged.
