Description
A very early map of the Iberian Peninsula with the Balearics to the east. In the Mediterranean and the Ocean are three historic sailing vessels and a spouting sea monster while another sea monster is just swimming around. With fine calligraphic lettering and highly detailed engraving. A block-style title cartouche decorates the map.
Places like Madrid, Seville and Barcelona are depicted on the map. On one half of the backside is a decorative title and cartouche. This charming map was published in the 1588-edition of Sebastian Münster’s 'Cosmographia'.
After 1588, this map was only re-published in the German editions of the 'Cosmographia' of 1592, 1598, 1614, and 1628 and is thus comparatively rare.
This is a map from Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographiae, the first detailed, scientific, and popular description of the world. Münster originally intended to describe only Germany, but gradually he widened his scope to encompass all of Europe, and even the world. The scientifically most valuable sections are those which deal with Germany and Central Europe.
Münster received the assistance of more than one hundred and twenty collaborators, who provided him with the most up-to-date information relating to the towns and places described.
