Description
Very fine illuminated leaf from a Liturgical Psalter in Latin with the reading from the Vulgate Bible, Deuteronomy 32:16 - 32:27. Lines in a slightly irregular gothic hand, black ink, plummet ruling. Pencil foliation in the upper right corner indicating number 194.
The origin of the Psalter is here convincingly ascribed to England, rather than to Flanders, due to the inclusion of a scene from the life of St. Thomas Becket on one of the leaves sold at auction in 1991, the greater similarity with line-fillers found in two Psalters from Worcester (in Cambridge and Krivoklát Castle), the "Salvin Hours" ( London, British Lib.) and the Windmill Psalter (New York, Pierpont Morgan Lib.) further enhances an English origin.
18 Versal initials in burnished gold or blue accompanied by alternating blue or red penwork, one gold initial with penwork within the layout.
Various fine decorative line-fillers in gold, red and blue, including dogs, a dragon and a bull grotesque, as well as more conventional but refined linear line-fillers.
Since the end of the 1960s several folia from a Psalter, formerly in the collection of the late Esther Rosenbaum have surfaced.
The present page undoubtedly belonged to this important 13th century Psalter, of which illuminated pages were sold a.o. for auction at Sotheby's, London (25 April 1983, lot 69, sold to Quaritch), also lot 14, Dec. 1991, lot 6 in Dec.1992, another was offered for sale at Maggs ( cat. 1340, No. 4).
Three other leaves were present in the exhibition on private prayer books in Cologne, Schnüttgen Museum, 1987, No. 8. In a recent sale in London another leaf, fol. 193, was sold at Sotheby's, 2003, lot. 13.

For bids entered within the BidAsk spread, we use the proxy-bidding process. Our system will act as your bidding agent by entering your bid competitively against other bidders.
You don't have to worry about sitting at your computer to track the bidding process until the closing. Proxy bidding takes the stress out of the bidding process, and you get the item at the lowest possible price.
How it works
For example:
You don't have to worry about sitting at your computer to track the bidding process until the closing. Proxy bidding takes the stress out of the bidding process, and you get the item at the lowest possible price.
How it works
- You can bid the maximum price you would be willing to pay for an item.
- If there are no other bidders on a lot, the winning bid is always reduced to the lowest amount as shown in the BidAsk spread.
- If another bid comes in, the software will place a new bid following the bid increment until the sale ends and you win or the price exceeds your set maximum.
- If you want to increase the current bid amount with a proxy bid you simply enter the new bid amount. You will never bid against yourself.
- Your maximum bid is always confidential.
For example:
- if the BidAsk spread is $50 - 100 and you place a bid of $ 80, and no other bids exist, the high bid will be reduced to $50.
- If another person places a bid of $55, our proxy system will increase your bid to $60 since that is one increment above the other bid.
- A buyer pays a commission of 20% on the hammer price on the first $5,000 and 15% on the excess.
