Description
With a wood block cut of Jews burned alive during the southern German pogroms of 1298. Dimensions of 116x155mm.
The text accompanying the illustration redas "The Jews, who had multiplied in many places, were burned in the first year of emperor Albert at Nuremberg, Würtzburg, Rotenburg, and many other places, because of their evil deeds. Sparing no one of this unhappy race on account of sex or age, several thousand are said to have perished except for the children who had been baptized.[The German edition of the abridges this paragraph as follows: “The Jews, who had multiplied in many places, were burned at Nuremberg, Würtzburg, Rotenburg, and many other places, because of their evil deeds.”]".
On recto illustrations of Kings, doctor, comet, etc.
The text accompanying the comet illustration reads in English "At this time a comet appeared in the heavens as an omen of the future affliction and misery of the Christians. On Saint Andrew’s day in the same year an earthquake suddenly occurred, the like of which had never taken place; and in consequence many buildings were destroyed."
Folio page from the richest illustrated Incunable, the famous: Liber chronicarum or Nuremberg Chronicle, published the year that Columbus returned to Europe after discovering America.
The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Wohlgemut was Albrecht Dürer's tutor between 1486-90 and recent scholarship has shown, Albrecht Dürer may also have collaborated, since some of the cuts bear a remarkably close resemblance to the Apocalypse illustrations.
