Description
Guillaume de l'Isle's (1675-1726) well deserved reputation as one of the foremost geographers of the 18th century meant that his maps were influential for many years after his death. De l'Isle eradicated as much as possible imaginary geography in his maps.
This map, first issued by in 1700, is one of the landmarks in the history of mapping Africa as it did away with the Ptolemaic representations of Africa.
The Nile is correctly shown with its origins in Abyssinia. Jean Covens & Corneille Mortier does not incorporate any revisions of the later 1722 map in their re-issue, e.g. the insertion of Lake Maravi and the separation of the Niger and Senegal rivers. The cartouche in the upper right is similar to de L'Isle's except that it includes the names of Covens and Mortier.
The cartouche is beautifully decorated with elephants and an ostrich being hunted by a man on horseback, while a native is wrestling with a crocodile. A main title across the top bears a dedication to the Duke of Burgundy.
Covens and Mortier published numerous atlases during the first half of the eighteenth century, most of them bearing no date on the title page. In addition, the majority of maps of these atlases were assembled by order of collectors.
Reference: Norwich, Map 74, also map 59.
