Le bœuf-gras. (Boardgame).

Rare boardgame named "The big game of the fat ox". The celebration of the fat ox was a central custom of the Paris Carnival, which was held at mid-Lent, a period of fasting in the Catholic religion. The butchers, usually dressed as savages for the occasion, would very solemnly walk an ox adorned in its finest ornaments. Often accompanied by music on a "viola", a stringed instrument similar to the violin, the procession marched through Paris under the enthusiastic gaze of an impatient crowd. After a parade through the highest places in the capital, the beef was slaughtered and the meat sold at double the usual price.

The A.W.G.L. games (WOGUE and LEVY). Alphonse WOGUE and his associate G. LEVY were publishers of games at the end of the 19th century, under the brand name A.W.&G.L., until the regrouping of their company with others under the name "Les Jeux et Jouets Français" in 1904. The two partners were co-founders with Mr. Pean in 1884 of the Union Française des Fabricants de Jouets et d'Articles de Paris, the embryo of the Chambre Syndicale des Fabricants de Jouets et Jeux, of which they were the second member.
