Description
RECTO: The leaf is numbered 33. and is the hair side of the vellum.
Large miniature, 140 x 140mm of St. Luce in white and red robes, on a yellow background and a large capital, surrounded by a blue frame, with white penwork.
In her right hand she holds a palm leaf, in her left hand she holds a plate with her eyes. These are the attributes of St. Luce of Syracuse.
There are two versions about the eyes. One says that there were pulled out by her torturerers before they stabbed her. The other is that she pulled out her own eyes, so she would be unattractive for her suitors.
VERSO: the flesh-side, or smooth side. Of the vellum, therefore the text is a little vague.
There are two very large multicolored illuminated capitals "V" in a square surround, and a "J" surrounded by multicolored leaves. Text and music as on recto.
There is a tear in the bottom, not touching text, and with old sewing-repair.
Slight cockling of vellum, as usual for a leaf of this size. Otherwise in good condition.
