Description
Book of Hours, printed by Thielman Kerver* in 1507. It is printed on vellum in black and red, with some hand-painted in red, blue, and gold.
To the right side of the text on the recto are metal cuts depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament with the captions in red [ these pictures explained the relation between the Old Testament and the Life of Christ ], the rest of the borders is ornamental.
On the verso is a large picture of the Nativity: the shepherds in the fields of Efratha and an angel in the sky, singing: Gloria in altissimis Deo... (The artist forgot to write the words in the banner!)
To help you read medieval Latin, here are the red captions on the recto: Matt. 26, 15 : [ et ait illis quid vultis mihi dare et ego vobis eum tradam at illi] constituerunt ei triginta argenteos
And said to them: What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? But they appointed him thirty pieces of silver. 26, 16: et exinde quaerebat oportunitatem ut eum traderet And from thenceforth he sought opportunity to betray him. At the bottom, the Old Testament 'equivalent': [ not Genesis 30, but 37!!] Genesis 37, 27: Melius est ut vendatur Ismahelitis et manus nostrae non polluantur [frater enim et caro nostra est adquieverunt fratres sermonibus eius. It is better that he be sold to the Ismaelites and that our hands be not defiled: [for he is our brother and our flesh. His brethren agreed to his words.] Genesis 39,1 : [igitur Ioseph ductus est in Aegyptum] emitque eum Putiphar eunuchus Pharaonis princeps exercitus [vir aegyptius de manu Ismahelitarum a quibus perductus erat.] And Joseph was brought into Egypt, and Putiphar, a eunuch of Pharao, chief captain of the army, an Egyptian, bought him of the Ismaelites, by whom he was brought. *The firm of Thielman Kerver is best known for its lovely printed Books of Hours, many of which include hand-painted miniatures and initial letters. Thielman Kerver, one of France's most prolific printers, began printing Books of Hours in 1497 and continued until he died in 1522. His widow, Iolande Bonhomme, took over the firm and continued to produce liturgical books of different types until 1556. Brunet notes that even though Kerver printed many different Books of Hours, his work is less common than that of his colleagues, Simon Vostre and the Hardouins. Brunet suspects that is because fewer copies on vellum were printed, and paper copies were destroyed. This may also account for the rarity of the present leaf.
