Description
A calendar leaf from an Italian Book of Hours, written on vellum in the neighborhood of Ferrara, around 1480.
The decorations of this leaf are extraordinary : the bouquet of flowers at the top, the initials "KL" and the linefillers are in bright colors and of great quality.
At the top of the calendar is not only given the number of days in the month of June, but also of the hours of the day and the night! [vii=8 and xvi=16, respectively].
On the left we see the Aure numerus or Golden Numbers, used to determine the date of Easter, the most important feast of the Church.
On the 17th of June the sun is in the sign of the Cancer. The special days are given in red [ the so-called red letter days!], e.g. Nativitas sci ioannis bate = the birthday of the blessed saint Joannis.
The letter is humanistic with traces of the Gothic book hand.
