Description
Important, early bird's-eye view of London, which appeared in the first Volume of Civitates Orbis Terrarum by Braun & Hogenberg.
The view is based on a previous 15-sheet plan showing the city of London, which, probably, appeared between 1547 and 1559. Of it, only three plates and no printed copies have survived, thus rendering this one the first extant plan of London. The present example is from the fourth state of the plate, with the spelling 'West Muster' the addition of the Royal Exchange and "cum privilegio". Tudor London, together with its suburbs, at that time extended well outside the original city walls.
The very core of the city is St. Paul's cathedral with its tall spire, which was destroyed in 1561. The gardens of the manor houses and palaces stretch out toward Charing Cross, and link the mercantile city with the royal court at Westminster. The Thames is teeming with ships and a variety of boats.
There are two panels of text flanking the costumed figures in the foreground: they describe the economy of London at the time.
Maybe this is the fourth state, with Westmuster instead of Westmester, with the addition of the Royal exchange and "cum privilegio".

Maps are shipped in solid tubes or flat between solid cardboard. Fully insured, signature required, and with online tracking. Shortly after shipment, you will get the tracking number by email.The standard is that we ship items by UPS or DHL for European destinations, and a flat shipping fee is added to each shipment. It is a one-time fee even if you buy multiple items. This fee covers shipping and insurance (up to the invoice amount) to:
- North America, Canada, Europe $ 30
- Asia $ 40
- For South America, Mauritius, Africa and Australia a shipping fee of $ 50 will be charged.
We charge only a one-time shipping fee if you have won 2 or more items.
