Description
A wonderful vellum leaf from a French Book of Hours, written at the end of the Middle Ages, around 1480, in Angers on the river Loire.
This region was well known for the many workshops for Books of Hours and masters who worked there, as Jouvenel, Robinet Tesard and the Master of the Geneva Boccaccio, became famous.
The painting depicts the so-called ?Gregory mass?: when he was celebrating mass Pope Gregory saw Christ rising behind the altar!
Around this scene we see a ladder, used to nail Jesus to the Cross and a person holding the lance with which His side was pierced. The tiara of the Pope is on the altar.
In the margins are wonderful paintings of acabthus leaves, flowers, a winged monster, a butterfly and two monkeys making music ? one on a flute and one playing the bag pipes!
