Description
A highly decorative and informative chart by Jeremiah Sautter and engraved by Johann Spiegel. This striking engraving depicts the four seasons: Spring with a spade and fresh flowers in bud - Summer with a scythe, a horn of plenty and the harvest - Autumn with plenty of grapes ready to turn into wine and Winter with no leaves on trees, wood for burning and a time for fur-lined coats.
Saturn represents the planets - he was among many other things, the god of generation, he is seen holding aloft a newborn babe, Luna/Moon - a woman shown as the divine embodiment of the moon, Mars - the god of war, seen brandishing his sword, Mercury - the messenger of the gods, seen here with his winged helmet and feet, holding his caduceus, Jupiter - the god of sky and thunder, seen holding lightning in his right hand, Venus - the goddess of love, seen with cupid and his arrow.
Other details depicted are the days of the week, along with sunrise and sunset, the longest day, and the longest night, days of the week, days in the month, hours in the day. A feast day is also mentioned.
In the center, you see a representation of the heavens, with stars in the solar system, together with the phases of the monthly lunar cycle, and the spot in the very middle is the mighty sun. The sun is also represented by a figure at the center top in the heavens. A wonderful and unusual item!
