COMPLETE Wall map of the Southern Low Countries (or Austrian Netherlands) published in 1789, composed of 16 leaves, each map ca. 320x395mm. and bound together.
First map with a large cartouche in French Louis XVI style. With fine coloring of outlines, towns, forests and large rivers. The map, printed on the large scale of 1/220.000 is presented here as an atlas consisting of 16 sheets bound in order. This is the second edition of three. (1786 , 1789 and 1793). Prepared by Jean Baptiste de Bouge (1757-1833), and engraved by Jeanne C. Maillart but the name is not on the first map (only: the caption invenit, sculp., scrips.). The map contains an extraordinary large number of geographical names and gives a rather accurate picture of the canal and road system in the Southern Low Countries at the end of the 18th century, just before the collapse of the Austrian regime. The area depicted covers the actual Belgium, Luxembourg and Noord Braband province in the Netherlands. On map XIII is a table listing the number of villages in each province.
