The map shows in fine detail, the route of the Corvette Astrolabe from its arrival on January 10, 1827, on the western coast of the South Island, through Tasman Bay and Cook's Strait, and along the northeastern coastline, before completing the expedition at the Bay of Islands and proceeding northwest on March 10, 1827, in the general direction of French Polynesia and the Society Islands.
Rear Admiral Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842) was a French explorer and naval officer, who explored the south and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica.
