Description
Blaeu's beautiful map of Virginia, Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay region on North America's eastern seaboard. It shows the discoveries in the area as detailed by John Smith in his map of 1612.
He was a leader of the Virginia Colony between 1608 and August 1609, and he led the exploration of the rivers of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay, during which he became the first English explorer to map the Chesapeake Bay area.
This map is, in part, famous for its depiction of in the upper left corner of Chief Powhatan, smoking his tobacco pipe seated, as the caption says: in-state when Capt. John Smith was delivered to him [a] prisoner.
The map shows in some detail the terrain of the region, with its many mountains, rivers, swamps and woodlands. Many fledgling settlements and Indian tribal grounds are named. The map is further enhanced by some eye-catching embellishments: a compass rose in the 'Mare Virginicum', a key symbol legend set in a rococo style cartouche, a Native American warrior is seen armed with a war club and a bow. There is the English royal coat-of-arms, a decorative set of mileage scales, and Blaeu's signature.
Perhaps the last word on this delightful map should go to Mr. Philip Burden, author of the excellent Mapping of North America.
"He considers this map to be one of the most important maps ever produced, and certainly one of the greatest possible influence."
