Description
A finely copper-engraved pair of images, depicting the rank order in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, as instated by Emperor Otton III [approx. 1000 A.D.].
Beginning on top with the most powerful group of the Electors of the Holy Roman Empire. These plates were originally engraved by master engraver Antonie Wierix for Gerard de Jode’s atlas, 'Speculum Orbis Terrae', but later re-issued in Abraham Ortelius’ 'Parergon', the first historical atlas.
This engraving was first published in 1593 in de Jode’s atlas. The plate was later acquired by Vrients and, from 1603, was included in Ortelius's 'Theatrum' and 'Parergon'. The engraving depicts the nobles who are entitled to choose Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. These plates show the highest-ranking officials at the top and the least powerful at the bottom. The emperor is centered at the top of the plate.
The signature of de Jode is still present in lower left corner. Published in 1603 in the 'Theatrum' editions and page number: few 1603L xxxviij or (mostly) xvij (300 copies printed) (text and page number, but not typesetting, last line, left aligned: qui sequenti tabula exhibetur.),
THE 2 PLATES CAN BE JOINED TOGETHER, CREATING AN IMAGE OF APPROX. 86 X 56 cm. A nice, unusual historical item.
Reference: Koeman III, Portr:HRE/1+2:32; Broecke 201-202.1; vgl. Ortroy S. 105f.
