Description
Double-page map of the county of Oxford on the Thames River. This English county map is highly decorative with figurative title cartouche of two scholars. Royal arms and nineteen other coats of arms of the colleges down the two sides of the map. The map is very detailed and gives many place names, smaller villages or settlements. Rivers, lakes, mountains and woods are also indicated. French text on verso. Also on verso illustration of Stonehenge. Also on verso illustration of Stonehenge.
Taken from Joan Blaeu's French edition Le Theatre du Monde, ou Nouvelle Atlas, Mise en lumiere Par Guillaume et Jean Blaeu Quatriesme Partie. Amsterdami, Apud Iohannem Blaeu. MDCXLV. 1645. volume IV. The fourth volume of his atlas focused on England and Wales. Blaeu established his firm in 1599 as instrument and globe makers. He went on to produce some of the highest quality atlases ever published.
Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) was the founder of the Blaeu publishing house. In 1634 he commenced publication of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" or "Novus Atlas" and on his death he was succeeded by his son Johannes (1596-1673). Johannes continuously enlarged and updated the "Theatrum" up to 1658, including the addition of a separate volume devoted to England and Wales. Blaeu maps are renowned for the consummate care and attention apparent in every stage of production - using only the best paper with finely engraved plates and a high standard of printing. The county maps have decorative title cartouches and often depict the coats of arms of those families with important county links.

Shipping
Maps are shipped in solid tubes or flat between solid cardboard. Fully insured, signature required, and with online tracking. Shortly after shipment, you will get the tracking number by email.The standard is that we ship items by UPS or DHL for European destinations, and a flat shipping fee is added to each shipment. It is a one-time fee even if you buy multiple items. This fee covers shipping and insurance (up to the invoice amount) to:
- North America, Canada, Europe $ 30
- Asia $ 40
- For South America, Mauritius, Africa and Australia a shipping fee of $ 50 will be charged.
We charge only a one-time shipping fee if you have won 2 or more items.
