The plate has caption title in English, Spanish and French, from the rare publication MEXICO Y SUS ALREDEDORES, the most elaborate and important Mexican lithographic book.

Particular note should be made of the details in costumes. The elegant clothing of nineteenth-century Mexican women is shown in many of the plates, as is the authentic garb of mestizos and Indians around Mexico City at the time. "The draughtsman ship and lithography is of a very high standard" - Abbey.
"One of the most significant lithographic productions in the history of the art: Mexico y Sus Alrededores is the most important work illustrating Mexico City in the nineteenth century" - Mathes.
According to Roberto Mayer in his "Nacimiento y Desarrollo del Album Mexico y Sus Alrededores" (in: Casimiro Castro y Su Taller. Mexico. 1996), this book was not issued in true editions but rather copies were made as the market demanded.
Accordingly, the plates were offered in parts to subscribers beginning in 1855, with bound sets available the following year containing 38 plates.
