Description
A striking example of Wagenhaer's map of the coast of Latvia, including the area around Riga and part of Curland. North is at the bottom. This map was printed in a French edition with additional title and subtitle in margins. French text to verso. This lovely chart includes sea monsters, sailing ships, a compass rose, a decorative cartouche, anchorages and soundings.
Wagenhaer was a Dutch pilot who produced the first set of effective navigational charts, under the title Spiegel der Zeevaerdt.
