Description
Rare map of the Transmississippi West, with an oversized California, Oregon, Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico and Utah and a totally eclipsing Washington, Idaho, North & South Dakota, Montana, Oklahoma & Colorado, who are not named.
With the lakes shown oversize, including Gran Lago Salato". Some cities noted, but more often Forts - Fort Leavenworth, Connci, St. Vrains, Laramie, Mackenzie.
This rare map was prepared by Francesco Costantino Marmocchi. Above the map "Geografia Commerciale". From "Il Globo Atlante di carte Geografiche compilate da F.C. Marmocchi per servire di corredo al suu corso di geografia commerciale", with the maps engraved by engraved by Gius. Cattaneo, Campo Antico, C. Poggiali, G. Bonatti, and Ces. Magrini.
The map shows a pre-Gadsden Purchase border with Mexico, following the Gila River. Oregonia occupies the entire region between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific, bounded to the north by Nuova Bretagna. Very curious Nebraska is shown extending from the Rocky Mountains to the Missouri River and the Kansas River, with a very odd extension in the southeast corner, south at it reaches Ft. Council and the Iowa Border.
Kansas extends from Arkansas and the Rio Roxo (Red River) to Yutah (Utah) and the Rio Grande and to the Nebraska River in the North. The California, New Mexico and Utah Borders are similarly misshaped. Perhaps most interesting of all is the inclusion of Arrissonia, south of the Gila River.
Including one of the earliest references to Arizona and the only example of Arizona located south of the Mexican Border. (Source raremaps.com)
Marmocchi (Poggibonsi, 1805-Geneva, 1858) was known as a geographer and cartographer. He emigrated to Rome, and later to Corsica, later settled in Turin and finally in Genoa, where he remained
