Description
The 'miniature' Speed map by Pieter van den Keere of Tartaria, published at the beginning of the 17th century. From the pocket edition of Speed's atlas.
A small title cartouche is seen in the extreme lower right corner of the map. Map detail is quite extensive, with mountains, lakes, the Caspian Sea, rivers, and settlements are all well defined and nicely engraved.
The map extent covers from Muscovy and 'Part of Europe' in the west across to The Strait of Anian in the far east; from a partially engraved Nova Zembla in the north south until Tajikistan. The maps covers most of today's central and eastern Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, and northern China. Korea is engraved as an island, and a small 'Part of America' is depicted.
