Description
The famous and important map of Tartary, Japan, and the west coast of North America, from Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terarrum, the first modern atlas of the World.
This map is the earliest obtainable map to name California, and includes the 7 cities of Cibola in the Southwestern US, but only 6 cities are actually shown.
Also the earliest printed map focusing on the North Pacific. One of the first to name the Straits of Anian (Bering), and with a curious treatment of Japan, and much detail in Tartary, Russia and China, including a note about Marco Polo and the great Khan.
Richly decorated with several vignettes, two decorative cartouches, sailing ships, and a flying fish. Vignettes depict the tents of the Tartar kings. The map is annotated in Latin and has French text on verso. Beautifully engraved by Frans Hogenberg.
According to the references, this is the 1609 Latin edition of which had only 300 copies printed.

Maps are shipped in solid tubes or flat between solid cardboard. Fully insured, signature required, and with online tracking. Shortly after shipment, you will get the tracking number by email.The standard is that we ship items by UPS or DHL for European destinations, and a flat shipping fee is added to each shipment. It is a one-time fee even if you buy multiple items. This fee covers shipping and insurance (up to the invoice amount) to:
- North America, Canada, Europe $ 30
- Asia $ 40
- For South America, Mauritius, Africa and Australia a shipping fee of $ 50 will be charged.
We charge only a one-time shipping fee if you have won 2 or more items.
