Description
Satirical condemnation of the Axis leaders by a Polish-Jewish cartoonist.
Issued in a 1942 edition of Esquire Magazine, this image by the talented artist Arthur Szyk shows the coterie of Axis leaders and their diabolical geopolitical aspirations.
Hitler, head of the fictitious Schicklgruber & Company (allegedly Hitler’s original name) mapmaking firm, can be seen at work drawing a map of German South America. His inspiration, a copy of Idiot’s Delight, can be seen at his feet.
Meanwhile, Joseph Goebbels can be seen welcoming Hideki Tojo into the club with the words, “now that you’ve joined us, the Fuhrer will make a special map for you!” Other map “customers” can be seen in the form of Benito Mussolini, Francisco Franco, and Amin al-Husseini, while caricatures of Hitler’s other cronies – Goering and Himmler – are also present. A list of additional customers (including Pétain) and blank map cards can be found on the floor, reflecting on the insatiable ambitions of the Axis regimes.
Born of Jewish parents in Lodz, Poland, Szyk acquired his early art training in Paris and Kracow. Between 1919 and 1920, during Poland's war against the Soviet Bolsheviks, he served as artistic director of the Department of Propaganda for the Polish army regiment quartered in Lodz. In 1921, he moved to Paris where he lived and worked for ten years.
In 1934, Szyk travelled to the United States for exhibitions of his work, including one at the Library of Congress where a series of thirty-eight miniatures commemorating George Washington and the Revolutionary period were shown. In late 1940, after a period of residence in England, he immigrated to the United States.
