Description
An unusual rendering of Tse's "Situation in the Far East". Tse Tsan-tai (1872-1939), a Chinese patriot, drew the original political cartoon in Hong Kong in 1899, warning against the ambitions of Western powers to partition China.
The message resonated with the Communists, who re-purposed the cartoon for their own use. Russia is depicted as a bear, the United Kingdom as a lion, the French as a frog climbing up from Indochina, and the US as a bald eagle flying across from the Philippines.
The bear representing Russia is intruding from the north into Mongolia and Manchuria.
The British bulldog (with a lion body?) is lying across eastern and southern China, with its front paw reaching Hong Kong and its tail around the colony of Weihaiwei.
The Gallic frog is in southeast Asia; the frog has the Hainan Island in its right hand (in reference to the colony of Kouang-Tchéou-Wan) and part of the Sichuan in its left hand.
The bald eagle representing the United States is approaching from the Philippines (the U.S. had already invaded the Philippines at this time).
The (creepily drawn) Japanese Sun spreads its rays across Korea onto China, while also fishing for Taiwan (Pomosa). Next to Hong Kong, Macau is held by the Portuguese shrimp, and the Shantung pennisula is surrounded by the German Sausage of Ambition (!). At the bottom of the map, a line of other European countries are waiting to also enjoy a slice of the cake.
Amid all of this, in the center of the map are the officials, intellectuals and social elites of Imperial China, completely ignorant of the dire circumstances their country is in, and only caring about themselves.
