Description
This important map of the world, first plate, appeared in the “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum” of Abraham Ortelius, the first regularly produced world atlas.
Ortelius consulted many sources for his map, including his friend Gerard Mercator, earlier works by Giacomo Gastaldi, Gemma Frisius, Laurentius Fries and other early mapmakers can be seen in the map. South America retains the unusual bulged south-west coast drawn by Mercator.
Much of the geography of North America is speculative, the Mississippi River does not appear on the map, Nova Francia is named, but there is no trace of the Great Lakes. A massive Terra Australis Nondum Cognita is shown with equally bold conjecture in the Southern Hemisphere.
Includes several sea monsters, a sailing ship and other decorative embellishments. The plate has been signed by the famous engraver, Frans Hogenberg, and was used for the first 16 editions of the “Theatrum Orbis Terrarum”. A crack developed in the lower left corner from 1570 onwards and this map shows evidence of that crack.

Shipping
Maps are shipped in solid tubes or flat between solid cardboard. Fully insured, signature required, and with online tracking. Shortly after shipment, you will get the tracking number by email.The standard is that we ship items by UPS or DHL for European destinations, and a flat shipping fee is added to each shipment. It is a one-time fee even if you buy multiple items. This fee covers shipping and insurance (up to the invoice amount) to:
- North America, Canada, Europe $ 30
- Asia $ 40
- For South America, Mauritius, Africa and Australia a shipping fee of $ 50 will be charged.
We charge only a one-time shipping fee if you have won 2 or more items.
