Description
The rare first plate of Waghenaer's general sea chart of Europe, dated 1583, with Latin text on verso; from the first Latin text edition, published in Leiden: Frans van Raphelengen for CCornelis Claesz..
The chart covers most Europe, the British Isles, Iceland, the western Mediterranean, and much of North Africa and the Western Atlantic.
The earliest obtainable printed sea chart of Europe.
Embellished with compass roses, sea monsters, sailing ships, coats of arms and rhumb lines.
Including the mythical Island of Brazil.
From his "Spiegel der Zeevaerdt", being the first printed sea atlas with charts and sailing directions assembled systematically in one book. The plates are engraved by Joannes Doetecum.
Because this map was significantly larger than the other maps in the atlas, it rarely appears on the market in good condition. Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer was not only an expert cartographer but he was also an ace pilot. Born in 1534, Lucas hailed from Holland and took active part in establishing the North Holland School.
Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer was one of the prominent personalities who helped in the initial development of Nautical Chart Making in Netherlands. Lucas Janszoon Waghenaer sailed extensively and his sailing experience of 25 years facilitated in making navigational charts that became famous all over the world. Spiegel der Zeevardt or the Mirror of the Sea, his compilation of charts is not only effective but fantastically elaborated with pictures, navigating symbols, tidal details, sailing routes etc. The compilation provided sailing directions of the Baltic and the North Sea.
In 1588, Waghenaer's works became more popular after it was translated into English and earned the name of Waggoner. He passed away in the year 1606.
Reference: Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica Vol. IV, Wag 5A.
