Description
These rare gores are very possibly the only surviving examples from a 17 inch (44cm) diameter globe by Hondius and Janssonius. It is believed that only four of five examples of the globe itself are recorded (in three states of 1623, 1636, 1648)
This globe it must be emphasized, was an original production and is to be distinguished from others with Jodocus Hondius II's imprint, which were re-issues of globes by his father Jodocus I.
These delightful four gores mostly cover the important North and Central American sections of the globe. They show excellent cartographic detail along with whimsical illustrations of sea monsters, figures in the sea and ocean going galleons in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Compass roses and numerous radiating rhumb lines complete the scenes.
In one upper portion of a gore there is an address to the viewer: "Lectori meo" that states the claim for the globes geographic originality. {translation] "To my reader. Much to be found on this globe that was unknown to the ancients, And not only have the errors of the ancients been exposed, but new lands (are also given). Many have published globes: but one may truly say that up until nownone has been published which contains everything so elegantly. You will find changes here in all of America and in and around the Tartar Ocean as well as a maximum of new things in other places. Therefore, reader, make use of this newest and most exact globe…"In fact, many aspects of the mapping of North America found on this globe are uncommonly advanced for the period or altogether unlike anything seen on contemporary maps or globes.
Abraham Goos performed the superb engraving on these gores. Gores are cut and applied by hand on paper-mache globe spheres. A globe is meticulously handcrafted, and takes time and skill to prepare. Map extent is from the Arctic Circle south as far as the northern reaches of South America.
Reference: van der Krogt, Globi Neerlandici, HON VI, pp.484-486. Globes not in Stevenson.
