Description
The first of Münster's world map blocks, which can be distinguished from the editions of 1550 and after, the later editions being significantly revised and including the initials of the engraver David Kandel.
The first map to name the Pacific Ocean (Mare Pacificum). The west coast of America appears on the right side of the map. A Northwest Passage stretches towards Asia with a note in Latin that it leads to the Moluccas.
The lands in the Arctic are all joined together in one large promontory that includes Iceland and Scandinavia with the name of Terra Nova sive Bacalhos.
All of North America is called Terra Florida.
The map is embellished with two fierce sea monsters. Surrounding the earth are billowing clouds and numerous wind gods reflecting the wind characteristics. North America retains its unusual shape almost bisected by water.
By 1588 a new edition of the Cosmographia had become necessary following the latest explorations and discoveries. All the maps were re-cut to bring them up to date.
