Description
A scarce and splendid map of ancient Egypt. West is at the top and the Nile bisects Egypt. A small inset shows the region around Alexandria to good detail.
With the Red Sea, and some very fine cartouches with the Pyramids, Nile waterfalls, the Sphinx, and the Tombs of the Kings etc. With a large colored cartouche, and in addition, the map is in full contemporary color.
Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) was a German engraver and publisher, who established himself and his family as perhaps the most famous of German map publishers. Following his death in 1724, the business continued under the name Homann Heirs. This Homann map is finely engraved, and with original wash color.
