Description
This is a rare nautical chart of part of the Pacific Ocean displaying the routes of Spanish galleons between Acapulco and the Philippines. The tracks of the Spanish Nostra Seigniora de Cabadonga as well as the British Navy Commodore George Anson are also shown. A crude and rather theoretical depiction of Japan is shown in the top left opposite the coast of a portion of California. The map names numerous important destinations along the California coast including Cabo San Lucas, San Diego, and Acapulco. The Hawaiian Islands have yet to be mapped as this cart predates their discovery by James Cooks by about 30 years. It was drawn by Seale and published as a supplement to the 1848 English edition of Anson's important book “A Voyage Round The World”.
Baron George Anson (1697 - 1762) was a British commodore and a wealthy noble who joined the British Navy. He was given command of a fleet of six ships charged with the mission of attacking Spanish possessions in South America.
