Description
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. A 26 page description extracted from the first edition of Churchill's "A Collection of Voyages and Travels: Some Now First Printed from Original Manuscripts, Others Now First Published in English: In Six Volumes with a General Preface Giving an Account of the Progress of Navigation from Its First Beginning. London, Printed by assignment from Messrs. Churchill for John Walthoe... Tho. Wotton... Samuel Birt... Daniel Browne... Thomas Osborn... John Shuckburgh... and Henry Lintot. "
Hendrik Hamel sailed on the Sperwer to Batavia in January 1653 and he arrived there in June the same year. Hence they set sail for Japan with on board the new governor for Formosa, Cornelis Caesar. They shipwrecked near 'Quelpaerts' under the coast of Korea. After taken prisoner they were brought to Korea where they were held for 13 years.
After that period Hamel and a few of his men escaped and reached Japan in 1666. They were taken to Nagasaki to the Dutch factory. In 1668 they arrived again in the Netherlands. This account of the unexpected and involuntary visit to Korea (1653-1666) has long been known as the earliest report in a western language on the land, people and customs of Korea and became very popular in most languages.
