Tycho Brahe's famous observatory Uraniborg on the island of Hvan in the Danish Sound was established in 1576, under the patronage of Frederick II, King of Denmark. Tycho Brahe had studied and traveled widely in Europe, buying instruments, visiting mathematicians and making astronomical observations. By the year 1592 the building of his observatory had been completed.
Here talented young astronomers were given the opportunity to improve their knowledge of science under the direction of Tycho Brahe and with the help of up-to-date instruments. One of these students was Willem Blaeu.
