Description
Decorative plan of Uraniborg, the observatory build by the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. The building was dedicated to Urania, the Muse of Astronomy, and called "Uranienborg", or "Castle of Urania." After losing the financial support from the new King Christian IV of Denmark, Tycho abandoned Hven in 1597.
Tycho Brahe had studied and traveled widely in Europe, buying instruments, visiting mathematicians and making astronomical observations. By the year 1592 the building of his observatory had been completed. Here talented young astronomers were given the opportunity to improve their knowledge of science under the direction of Tycho Brahe and with the help of up-to-date instruments. One of these students was Willem Blaeu.
