Description
Lithograph; overall size 67 x 49 cm by Franz Hanfstaengl, after an original self portrait by Gerard Dow (Dou); printed on papier de Chine, pasted onto thicker paper; with blind stamp of 'Konigliche Gemalde Galerie Dresden'.
Very detailed portrait of the artist sitting in his studio, surrounded by sculptures, an atlas, a globe, a violin etc. Dow or Dou (1613–1675) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, who produced small, highly polished paintings. He specialised in genre scenes and is noted for his trompe-l'oeil "niche" paintings and candlelit night-scenes, with strong chiaroscuro. He was a student of Rembrandt.
